Parental leave and benefits to check before a birth

A birth changes both your timetable and household cash flow. Prepare a written plan with the employer and compensation office, especially if you recently moved to Switzerland. Leave entitlement, benefit eligibility and additional employer pay are separate questions.

Establish the federal benefit position

The OASI/DI Information Centre describes maternity allowance for up to 14 weeks and two weeks of leave for the eligible other parent within six months after birth. This means the legal father at birth or within six months, or the mother's wife recognised as the other parent at birth under Article 255a(1) of the Civil Code. These allowances generally replace 80% of previous earnings, subject to a daily ceiling. Eligibility involves insurance and employment history and status at birth. The usual qualifying periods are nine months insured and five months working, with specific adjustments and exceptions.

Bring the international history into the assessment

The official guidance states that relevant insurance and employment periods in EU/EFTA states and the United Kingdom count. Gather employment dates and insurance records from those countries and ask the compensation office what evidence it needs. Ask HR how the allowance is claimed, who pays it and whether the contract or collective agreement provides additional pay or longer leave. Cantonal additions can also matter, as the official maternity guidance notes for Geneva.

Plan the period after paid leave

Map return dates against childcare availability, partner leave and any agreed reduced schedule. Unpaid leave needs its own discussion about income and insurance. Ask about special rules if the newborn remains in hospital or circumstances change. Family allowances have a separate application basis. Before the birth, agree which documents and employer confirmations you will submit and who will handle follow-up while you are caring for the baby.
