Finding work

Searching for part-time and flexible jobs

A part-time percentage describes the share of a full-time workload, while flexibility concerns when and where the work happens. A position advertised at 60% can be spread across several patterns. Search using both concepts so you can assess whether a role fits your daily responsibilities.

Search with workload ranges

Use terms such as Teilzeit, temps partiel or tempo parziale alongside your occupation. Examine advertised ranges such as 60–80% and decide where your availability falls. Include positions with negotiable workload when your experience is strongly relevant. Keep a list of minimum income, preferred hours and days that are genuinely fixed for you.

Ask about the weekly pattern

Request the normal distribution of hours, compulsory meeting days and expectations during busy periods. A three-day arrangement and five shorter days have different implications for commuting and childcare. Clarify whether remote work is available for that position, when attendance is needed and how changes are agreed. For shift work, ask how far ahead rosters are published.

Compare responsibility with capacity

Discuss which tasks belong to the proposed workload and how cover is arranged on your non-working days. Ask whether the quoted salary is for the actual percentage or a full-time equivalent. Consider travel time and care costs alongside income. A good agreement aligns hours, duties and handovers, giving both you and the employer a clear understanding of what can reliably be delivered.
