Budgeting for a move before the first Swiss salary

Relocation creates a timing problem as well as a cost problem. Housing payments, travel and insurance can arrive before your first salary. Plan from the decision date through the first stable months of employment, using actual quotes wherever possible.

List one-off commitments

Include travel, removal services, temporary accommodation, documents, translations and essential furnishings. Record the housing deposit separately as tied-up cash, with its release conditions. Ask the employer which costs are reimbursed, what evidence is required and when payment occurs. A reimbursement after starting leaves an initial financing need. Add any overlapping rent or unavoidable bills in your current country.

Date recurring expenses and income

Enter the first salary date, ordinary monthly amount and any later thirteenth-salary instalment. Request confirmation where payroll cut-off dates might affect the first payment. Price rent and charges, health insurance for each family member, transport, food and childcare. FOPH explains the insurance requirement after taking residence; budget the applicable premiums from the coverage start rather than assuming the enrolment window is free.

Write down who will pay each invoice, particularly when household members arrive on different dates.

Stress-test the transition

Run a delayed-start scenario and an early job-ending scenario using your actual contract and permit position. Keep funds for essential bills and a feasible alternative housing or return plan. Set a maximum affordable temporary stay and a point for revising the plan. Use separate lines for confirmed figures, estimates and optional purchases. Delay discretionary furniture or a vehicle until the permanent location and work pattern are established.
