Salary & offers
Is your Swiss salary offer competitive?
A salary figure becomes informative when its basis is clear. The same monthly amount can represent different annual income, hours and responsibilities. Evaluate market positioning separately from the amount your household needs to live comfortably.

Define a comparable job
Record the occupation, sector, region, experience required and actual responsibilities. Managing a team, holding a technical licence or working nights can change the comparison. Use official usual-wage information and relevant professional associations as reference points. A national average bundles together very different jobs. Statistical estimates describe groups and provide a starting point for discussion, while an individual offer reflects the specific role.
Normalise the package
Ask for guaranteed annual gross salary at the offered employment percentage, the full-time equivalent and contractual weekly hours. List a thirteenth salary, fixed allowances and variable bonus separately. For example, CHF 7,000 paid thirteen times equals CHF 91,000 annually; CHF 7,500 paid twelve times equals CHF 90,000. These are arithmetic examples, with different monthly cash flow. Compare pension contributions, leave, training and commuting requirements alongside pay.
Make a personal decision
Estimate deductions and costs for the actual household and home location. An offer above a statistical midpoint can still leave little room after childcare and housing. Write down a minimum acceptable package and the evidence supporting any counterproposal. Ask about salary-review timing and criteria if the starting salary is constrained. Keep uncertain bonuses outside the budget used for essential expenses.
