Your first Swiss job without local experience

For a first Swiss position, an employer needs to understand how your previous work relates to its tasks. Local experience may be useful, but its importance differs between occupations. Your application can make unfamiliar employers, qualifications and responsibilities easy to assess.

Translate experience into relevant evidence

Explain the size and purpose of previous organisations briefly, then describe your own contribution. For example, identify the equipment you maintained, the clients you supported or the reporting process you improved. Use figures only where you can substantiate them. Include references and certificates requested by the employer, with clear context for documents issued in another country.

Identify genuine local knowledge gaps

Read several comparable advertisements to distinguish recurring needs from one employer’s preferences. A gap might concern a local technical standard, a language task or a regulated qualification. Check formal recognition separately. Ask a professional contact how that knowledge is used in practice, then choose targeted learning or a demonstrable project with a defined outcome.

Choose an entry route with progression

A permanent role, a fixed-term assignment or a structured returner opportunity may each provide useful experience. Compare duties, pay, supervision and the skills you will gain before accepting a less senior position. Ask what success looks like after the first three months and who supports induction. Keep your longer-term target visible so the first job develops relevant evidence for the next step.
