Lausanne and Vaud: research, sport and life above the lake
Lausanne offers a university and research environment, an Olympic identity and lakeside leisure. Across Vaud, the right home base depends on whether your work is on a campus, in the city or elsewhere in the canton.

Identify your route into the ecosystem
EPFL describes teaching, research and innovation as its core missions. The wider western Swiss economy also includes life sciences, digital activities and precision engineering. Search separately for academic appointments, technical support and private-company roles because contracts and requirements differ. For sports-related work, identify the organisation and function directly. Research and sporting institutions offer leads for employer research; their career pages show current openings and requirements.
Treat hills and connections as part of housing
Lausanne’s hillside setting makes distance on a map an incomplete guide. Test the actual walk from a prospective home to transport, shopping and childcare. Compare access to your exact workplace, especially if it is on the western campus side. A convenient public-transport connection may be more valuable than a shorter straight-line distance. Include evening services when you assess neighbourhoods and the cost of attendance.
Choose activities you can repeat
Ouchy, the Olympic Museum, Plateforme 10 and nearby Lavaux provide distinct leisure options. Build one regular weekday activity and one occasional outing into your budget. French helps with local services and joining groups, while workplace language depends on the team. Visit outside a holiday weekend and try your planned routine. This reveals whether the lake, culture and research environment translate into a satisfying ordinary week.
