Salary & offers
Negotiating after receiving a Swiss job offer
Once an offer arrives, you can discuss a concrete combination of salary, responsibilities and working conditions. Start by confirming your interest and reviewing the complete package. The employer's response will depend on its budget, pay structure and recruitment priorities.

Prioritise your request
Calculate the guaranteed annual salary and identify one or two important gaps. Use the scope of the role, relevant experience and credible market comparisons to support a salary adjustment. A specific request is easier to evaluate than a general demand for a better offer. Keep your acceptable minimum private and decide which trade-offs genuinely work for your household.
Discuss the whole arrangement
If salary flexibility is limited, explore appropriate alternatives such as additional leave, funded training, a different start date or relocation reimbursement. Ask for conditions: a relocation payment may have repayment clauses, and a salary review needs a date and meaningful criteria. A future review is a process commitment unless a specific increase is guaranteed. Confirm how remote work, travel and overtime are handled where they materially affect the role.
Close the loop in writing
Summarise the points discussed and request the revised offer or contract. Check that verbal promises are reflected accurately, including employment percentage and any thirteenth salary. Use genuine competing deadlines factually, with the relevant date. Allow time to review the documents and coordinate permit procedures where required. Once terms are agreed, make your acceptance clear and retain the final version alongside the original offer for reference.
