Finding employers open to third-country applicants
For many applicants from outside the EU/EFTA who need new Swiss work admission, a job offer begins a regulated process. SEM describes qualification requirements, labour-market priority, salary and working conditions, and available quotas. The employer submits the application to the canton.

Target a specific professional fit
Identify roles where your documented expertise directly matches the work: a specialised engineering process, a research method or responsibility for a particular technical system. Explain achievements and qualifications precisely. International operations or English-language advertisements can indicate a suitable working environment, but they do not prove that admission is available for a vacancy. Assess actual openings and stated requirements.
Qualify the opportunity early
State your nationality, current residence and any existing Swiss permit accurately. Ask whether the employer will consider applicants needing work authorisation for this position and who manages the process. Existing family or residence rights can change what is required. An EU residence permit alone does not grant Swiss employment rights. Keep a record of the employer's answer so later interviews use the same assumptions.
Support a complete application
Prepare qualifications, employment evidence and a clear chronology. The employer must establish that the relevant admission criteria are met and may need to document recruitment efforts. Your documents support that employer-led application. Coordinate translations and recognition only where required. Treat the proposed start date as conditional on necessary approvals and entry formalities. SEM approval and permission to enter are distinct steps, so confirm the final instructions before travelling to start work.
