Family & settling in
Your first month in Switzerland: a settling-in checklist
The first month is easier when tasks have an owner, a deadline and proof of completion. Prepare one shared register for the household and a separate document folder for each person. Start with the formalities that affect lawful residence, work and essential services.

Complete registration and work formalities
For EU/EFTA nationals taking up employment lasting more than three months, SEM requires local registration within 14 days of arrival and before starting work. Other admission routes require their own entry and cantonal steps, so follow the conditions of your decision. Take identification, address evidence and the requested employment or family documents. Record pending appointments, fees and the contact responsible for each family member's application.
Secure health and children's arrangements
Organise individual basic health insurance within the applicable three-month period, accounting for any special international coordination. Timely enrolment normally brings premiums and cover back to the beginning of residence. Contact the local school authority promptly for children of compulsory school age and book the required care separately. Bring medication information and identify a doctor. For an imported dog, arrange the veterinary identification check and AMICUS reporting within ten days.
Make the address work in daily life
Document the housing handover, keep meter readings and check how bills will reach you. Set up payment arrangements, reliable phone access and internet suited to your work needs. Notify relevant organisations abroad of the move and establish mail forwarding where available. Walk the commute and school route before the first full week. At month's end, review unresolved applications and upcoming payments together, keeping confirmations with the original checklist.
