Finding work
Choose a Swiss city for your job search
Choosing a search city is an exercise in matching opportunities with daily life. Start with two plausible labour markets and compare them using the same criteria. A city’s reputation, sector presence and actual openings are different pieces of information.

Use sector anchors to form a shortlist
Zurich and Geneva are established financial centres. Basel and the Lake Geneva area feature in Switzerland’s chemical and pharmaceutical landscape. These facts suggest employers to investigate; check their current openings separately. For Lausanne, compare opportunities across the wider Vaud and Lake Geneva area. For every city, search your specific function and include nearby employment locations.
Compare language and practical access
German is relevant around Zurich and Basel, while French is central in Geneva and Lausanne; individual international teams may use English. Check the languages required for your actual role. Measure door-to-door travel for the expected start time, including late shifts where relevant. A city-centre address can be less useful than a home with a direct connection to the employer’s site.
Build a household decision table
For each candidate area, record suitable live vacancies, expected workload, housing examples, travel costs and any partner’s employment needs. Use comparable housing sizes and realistic commuting routes. Interview activity can indicate where your profile is receiving interest. Keep a primary and a secondary area until there is concrete evidence to commit; leisure preferences and access to nature belong alongside affordability and employment fit.
