Why Switzerland & regions
Choose a Swiss home base by the complete commute
Switzerland’s integrated transport network supports many residential choices. Your useful measure is the journey from your front door to the workplace at the hours you actually travel, multiplied across the week.

Measure the complete route
Record walking, waiting, connections and the final approach to the office or plant. Check an early start, a normal return and a late evening. A direct train with a longer headline journey can be easier than a shorter trip with fragile transfers. For example, compare two candidate addresses using the same arrival deadline and add a realistic buffer. Include the route to childcare if it is part of the morning.
Calculate weekly time and expenditure
Multiply return journeys by confirmed office days. Add ticket costs, station parking or bicycle storage, and compare them with housing savings. Include your partner’s journeys to see the household total. A car alternative needs fuel, parking and ownership costs as well as driving time. Compare actual ticket products for your pattern; an unlimited pass and occasional travel purchases solve different needs. Prices and service schedules require a current check.
Stress-test the arrangement
Ask your employer to clarify remote-working expectations and whether office attendance can change. For a home abroad, obtain a separate assessment of cross-border employment, tax and social-insurance implications. Test a missed connection and a day when you must collect a child or attend an evening course. Finally, check local shops and social activities: your home base should function on days when you stay nearby as well.
