Moving within Switzerland: compare the gain and organise the sequence
A move to another Swiss municipality or canton can change your commute, language environment and household budget. The decision is clearer when you compare the full first year with the steady-state benefit that follows.

Calculate the recurring gain and initial cost
List the new rent, transport, tax estimate, insurance premium and childcare arrangement alongside your current situation. Add moving services, overlapping rent, deposits and time away from work separately. A shorter commute may improve daily life even with similar housing costs; a more distant home may create extra travel. Compare both adults’ schedules and school continuity where relevant, using actual offers and quotations.
Clarify the residence procedure for your status
Identify your nationality, residence basis and permit category: L, B or C. Under the EU/EFTA free-movement framework, permits remain valid when holders and their admitted family members move canton; register with the new authorities and update the address on the permit. For other residence frameworks, ask the destination canton whether prior authorisation is required for your status. For family-based residence, include the sponsor’s status and your planned household arrangement.
Sequence housing and local arrangements
Confirm the applicable residence procedure before making binding commitments. Coordinate the old lease, new tenancy, handover and address registrations with the relevant municipalities. Ask insurers and service providers what changes with the address, and arrange school or childcare continuity early. Keep evidence of notifications and create a short overlap plan for keys, internet and essential travel. Finally, test the new commute under your normal working hours before committing.
