Switzerland, Germany, France or Austria: compare your actual options
A country comparison becomes useful when it compares places and contracts you could realistically choose. Zurich versus Munich or Geneva versus Lyon is more informative than a national salary headline.

Use equivalent employment offers
Write down annual gross pay, working hours, paid leave, contract duration and expected attendance for each option. Include any guaranteed additional salary payment once in the annual total. Compare similar responsibilities and seniority. Where an offer is missing, label the figure as an estimate and record its source. This prevents an optimistic Swiss scenario from competing against a fully documented current job.
Price the same household
Use the same household size, housing standard and childcare needs throughout. Identify which health and social insurance costs come through payroll and which require separate payments in each country. Include tax, commuting, family travel and pension implications. Convert currencies consistently and test a less favourable exchange rate if you retain expenses abroad. A lower rent can matter more than a small difference in tax.
Give time and belonging a weight
Score factors such as language confidence, your partner’s prospects, proximity to relatives and usable leisure time. German-speaking Switzerland adds everyday dialect exposure; French-speaking Switzerland and Ticino have different language contexts. Swiss transport connects many places, but your particular journey still needs testing. Agree on your priorities before ranking destinations, then identify which uncertain fact could change your choice most.
