Choosing a Swiss home base for two careers

A location that suits one employer can leave the other partner with a narrow search area. Evaluate the move as a two-career decision. Your aim is a home base where both people can pursue credible opportunities while sharing the practical work of settling in.

Build two evidence-based shortlists

For each partner, list target occupations, working languages, required qualifications and acceptable workloads. Find current vacancies and record location, attendance requirements and salary information where available. An industry's regional presence is a starting point for research; a suitable vacancy requires its own checks. Keep the two shortlists separate so the stronger first offer does not hide the second person's constraints.

Test the household timetable

Compare several residential locations using actual door-to-door journeys at the required hours. Add nursery or school drop-off, collection and occasional late meetings. Zurich's school-care guidance illustrates why municipal hours, tariffs and holiday arrangements matter. Elsewhere, obtain the local equivalent. A shorter commute for the lower-paid partner may preserve more combined working time and make a wider range of schedules possible.

Agree how to evaluate progress

Confirm each person's legal access to employment before treating either salary as available. Price language study and any recognition process, and agree how long you can support a career transition. Review actual interviews and suitable vacancies after an agreed period. If one partner accepts temporary lower-paid work, discuss the intended duration and future applications together. Compare the household's disposable income and time, including care and travel, across the shortlisted locations.
