Arranging health insurance for every family member
Swiss compulsory health insurance generally covers each resident through an individual policy. A working partner's cover does not automatically enrol the rest of the household. Make a separate insurance record for every adult and child, including their arrival or birth date.

Start with the correct insurance system
Residents generally must enrol within three months of taking up residence; newborns have the same period from birth. With timely enrolment, cover and premiums run from the start of the obligation. FOPH describes exceptions involving international social-security coordination, posted workers and other specific categories. Where someone works abroad or holds special international-organisation status, clarify the applicable system with the competent authority before cancelling existing cover.
Compare the whole year's cost
Basic insurers must accept people subject to compulsory insurance regardless of health. Compare premiums at the actual address, the deductible and access rules for the chosen model. Reserve money for cost sharing as well as monthly premiums. Children have their own premium and deductible options. Ask the canton about premium-reduction eligibility and procedures; include a subsidy in the budget once you know what applies to your household.
Keep medical access practical
Check that your intended doctor or paediatrician fits the selected model and accepts patients. Transfer prescriptions and relevant medical summaries. Review accident cover for each person: an employee with employer insurance covering occupational and non-occupational accidents can request suspension of the accident component in basic insurance, while other family members need appropriate protection. Supplementary insurance has separate underwriting and terms. Treat it as a separate decision with its own acceptance confirmation.
