Which minimum wage applies to a Swiss job?
Switzerland has no single nationwide statutory minimum wage for every job. Binding wage floors can arise from cantonal rules, collective agreements or standard employment contracts. The answer depends on the specific employment situation and the rules currently in force.

Start with the actual workplace
Record the canton where the work will be performed, the employer's activity and your duties. Geneva, for example, publishes its cantonal minimum wage, calculation rules and exceptions; rates can change through indexation. A company's registered office alone may not settle which rules apply to a worker at another location. For assignments across cantons, ask which rules cover each workplace.
Check the occupational category
A collective agreement may distinguish qualifications, experience, age categories or supervisory duties. Ask the employer to identify the applicable agreement and your classification. SECO's posting and minimum-wage portal directs users to sector-specific conditions and contacts. Confirm whether the stated hourly figure includes particular supplements and how paid leave or a thirteenth salary is treated under the relevant rules. Monthly comparisons also require the agreed working hours.
Separate legal compliance from negotiation
A usual-wage calculator provides a statistical reference where no binding minimum applies; that estimate and an enforceable minimum serve different purposes. Keep the calculation basis, agreement version and written offer together. If the classification or calculation is unclear, seek clarification from the competent cantonal labour authority or the agreement's enforcement body before relying on the amount. Market experience and responsibilities may still justify negotiating above the applicable floor.
