Applying without Swiss employment references
A Swiss employment certificate, often called an Arbeitszeugnis, describes the employment relationship and usually performance and conduct. If your career has been abroad, you can explain what evidence your previous employers normally issue and assemble a credible alternative.

Map the evidence you have
List your recent roles and the documents available for each: an employment confirmation, reference letter, contract extract or professional qualification. Remove confidential information from samples. A certificate confirming dates and duties serves a different purpose from an appraisal. Label documents accurately so the recruiter understands what each proves. Explain an unavailable certificate briefly, especially if the former business has closed.
Ask for useful verification
Under Swiss private employment law, employees can request a certificate; SECO distinguishes a full certificate from a confirmation limited to the nature and duration of employment. For foreign employment, the applicable local rules and practices govern what you can request. Ask a former supervisor for a factual account of your responsibilities and achievements. Agree in advance whether they can take a reference call and in which language.
Present a manageable package
Supply the strongest relevant records first and offer further evidence when requested. Ask whether a translation is needed before paying for certified translations of every document. Prepare a short explanation for the interview: what you did, what evidence exists and who can confirm it. Employers seeking information from previous employers need your consent under FDPIC guidance. Keep your current employer's involvement aligned with that permission and the stage of your search.
