When does a foreign qualification need recognition?

The need for recognition depends on the profession you intend to practise and the rules applicable at your intended place of work. The official recognition.swiss portal identifies whether recognition is required and which body handles the profession. Start there with the actual Swiss job title.

Identify the professional activity

A regulated profession requires specified qualifications for access to the activity. Regulation and competent authorities can depend on the occupation and canton. Search the relevant profession and compare its scope with the duties in the vacancy. If the name differs from your home-country title, describe the tasks to the competent body. The employer can help clarify which functions the position includes.

Separate recognition from recruitment

For an unregulated profession, an employer generally assesses your qualifications in recruitment; a formal assessment may still be useful or requested. Recognition of a qualification and immigration permission answer different questions. A recognition decision does not itself grant a work permit. Equally, residence status does not replace professional requirements. Ask about language competence and any additional professional authorisation relevant to the role.

Prepare the right evidence

Follow the responsible body's document list for diplomas, transcripts, training content, professional experience and translations. Ask about costs, processing steps and possible compensatory measures before booking a move. Where you hope to work while an application is pending, obtain explicit guidance about which activities are permitted. Tell recruiters the precise status: checking requirements, application submitted or decision received. Keep the authority's answer and any conditions with your application dossier.
