Finding work

When a speculative application is worth sending

A speculative application approaches an employer without a matching advertised vacancy. It is most useful when you can explain why your expertise fits a particular team or activity. Give this channel a limited place alongside applications to current openings.

Find a credible business connection

Research the employer’s products, services and Swiss locations. Identify a function where your experience could contribute, using public information and professional conversations. For example, experience maintaining similar equipment may justify contacting a relevant technical team. Keep any assumption about staffing needs clearly separate from facts you have verified about the organisation.

Write for one recipient and one purpose

Check whether the employer accepts unsolicited applications and which channel it provides. Introduce your professional focus, one relevant achievement and the kind of role you seek. State location, workload and availability where useful. Attach a concise dossier only as requested. Ask whether your profile could suit present or future needs and whether there is a more appropriate contact.

Decide how to follow up

Record the date, recipient and proposition so that a later message adds context. Follow any stated response timetable; otherwise, a brief status enquiry after a reasonable interval can establish whether further contact is useful. Treat a talent-pool registration as permission for future consideration under its terms. Continue applying elsewhere and review which targeted approaches produce meaningful conversations before increasing the effort.
