Why Switzerland & regions

A practical industry map for your Swiss job search

An industry map is a starting tool for employer research. It becomes useful when you connect a regional concentration to your own function and a realistic geographical search area.

Editorial review: 16 October 2026

Start with a few established concentrations

Greater Zurich Area highlights digital technology, robotics, life sciences and financial technology. Basel Area describes a strong life-sciences ecosystem alongside advanced manufacturing and ICT. Western Switzerland’s investment agency presents precision, life sciences, digital activities, finance and trading across its member cantons. Geneva also has international organisations, while Alpine destinations such as Graubünden support visitor economies. These are broad orientations; each region contains additional occupations and smaller specialist employers.

Follow your function across sectors

A quality specialist might compare pharmaceutical manufacturing with precision production. A software professional could consider a technology company, an industrial employer or financial services. Build a table with employer, actual worksite, function, required language and qualification. Add evidence from the company’s own career page. This often produces a more useful shortlist than searching only the best-known industry label associated with a city.

Turn the map into an application boundary

Choose a manageable travel area and inspect current vacancies within it. Mark positions requiring relocation, professional recognition or language development. Industry presence describes an ecosystem; vacancies, suitable contracts and hiring eligibility require separate verification. If your household has two careers, overlay both employer maps before choosing a home base. Revisit the map after several applications and adjust it using actual responses and newly published roles.
